Dear Parents,

Every type of study brings different skills, tools and new challenges to the fore. Music is no exception! Below, you will find a few tips that will help you support your child in his/her quest for musical knowledge and growth.

Value the experience-Your child may or may not grow to be a musical genius. The important element is the experience. A positive musical experience, no matter how great or small, can expand a child’s mind and abilities. People with positive musical experiences tend to be more creative, think “outside the box”, support the Arts, look for a variety of cultural experiences and generally become more well rounded individuals.

Support-Always use positive verbiage and body language when commenting on your student’s musical progress and abilities. As my Dad would say, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Ask questions-Ask your student what they are studying. Is it easy? What are the challenges? With this information what will you now be able to learn? What are your future goals as a musician?  What are you favorite types of music to play? Are there any groups that you can join?

Financial Commitment-By paying for lessons, buying musical instruments and supplies, you are making a potentially great financial commitment. Make your student aware of this and use music as an incentive for positive behavior and good grades. I.e., “I’m not going to get that new guitar you want until you have at least a “B” average.

Consistency-Make sure your students have a regular place and time to practice. Watch them and listen while providing a positive-risk-free environment.

Ask-If you or your student have any questions, contact me. I will return your call or email as soon as possible.
